What Is Gum disease?

Gum disease begins with the growth of bacteria in the mouth. It leads to tooth loss if not properly treated.

The inner layer of the gum and bone pulls away from the teeth and forms pockets in a person suffering from gum disease. Debris accumulates in these pockets, making them infected. Thereby, plaque spreads and grows below the gum line.

Toxins make the bone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place deteriorate. More gum tissues and bone are destroyed as the pockets deepen and the disease progresses. This is when tooth loss occurs as they are no longer anchored in place and become loose. One of the major reasons behind tooth loss is gum disease in adults.

Gum disease progresses painlessly and the symptoms are often subtle. Red and swollen gums are one of the major symptoms of gum disease. They bleed during and after brushing their teeth. There would be persistent bad taste and bad breath in the mouth.

Causes of Gum Disease

Though the formation of plaque is the primary cause of gum disaster factors affecting them.

Gums become more sensitive due to hormonal changes such as those occurring during pregnancy, puberty, or menopause. This makes it easier for the development of gum disease.

Illnesses such as cancer or HIV interfere with the immune system and may affect the condition of the gums. Patients with diabetes are at higher risk of developing gum disease as it affects the body's ability to use blood sugar.

Gum tissues find it hard to repair themselves due to bad habits such as smoking. Gum disease develops easily when there are poor oral hygiene habits. If proper brushing and flossing are not done regularly, the chance of getting illnesses increases.

How to Prevent Gum Disease

When proper plaque control is practiced, gum disease can be kept from getting worse. Brushing and flossing should be done regularly, and professional cleaning performed at least twice a year.

Use soft-bristled toothbrushes and fluoride toothpaste to brush the teeth. Flossing removes remaining food particles and plaque. It is also vital to rinse the mouth with an antibacterial mouthwash. It fights bad breath and prevents the formation of plaque.

Maintaining a balanced diet is the most important. It helps the immune system to fight against infection.
